Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Histopathology
Our engineers bring deep knowledge of a specific technical area but also value the opportunity to work across the full diagnostic pipeline. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer on the Diagnostics AI team, you will own models that read whole-slide images and surface findings pathologists can trust.
You will design, train, and productionize deep-learning models for tissue segmentation, cell detection, and biomarker quantification. You will partner closely with pathologists, research scientists, and platform engineers to turn validated research into software that runs reliably in real laboratory workflows. This role is based out of our Sofia headquarters with flexible hybrid scheduling.
Responsibilities
- Design, train, and evaluate deep-learning models for whole-slide histopathology, balancing accuracy, calibration, and runtime cost.
- Own the path from research notebook to production service: packaging, inference optimization, monitoring, and versioned releases.
- Build reproducible training pipelines and rigorous evaluation harnesses on multi-site, multi-scanner datasets.
- Collaborate with clinical and regulatory teams to ensure models meet validation, traceability, and post-market surveillance requirements.
- Mentor engineers and reviewers, raising the bar for model quality and engineering rigor across the team.
- Participate in your team's on-call rotation for the inference platform.
Required qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience as a machine learning or software engineer shipping models to production.
- Strong command of Python and a modern deep-learning framework (PyTorch preferred).
- Deep understanding of CS and ML fundamentals: data structures, optimization, evaluation, and experiment design.
- Experience with computer vision and large image data; comfort with the practical realities of gigapixel inputs.
- Experience deploying models as reliable services, including monitoring, regression testing, and incident response.
- Experience working with cloud computing (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Preferred qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- Prior work in digital pathology, medical imaging, or another regulated domain.
- Familiarity with foundation models for histology and self-supervised pretraining.
For this role, you will find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes patient safety. We are looking at your past work, your judgment under uncertainty, and your care for the people who rely on what we build.
Our perks
We focus on work/life balance, with flexible schedules and an open paid time off policy. We offer private health insurance, a generous learning and conference budget, modern hardware, and equity so that everyone shares in what we build together.
