Medical Data Annotation Intern

The Medical Data Annotation Internship introduces medical students to the careful language and review practices needed when pathology information is organized for software development and research. The role is centered on consistency, explanation, and quality checks rather than on making clinical judgments.

Under supervision, the intern may help review de-identified educational examples or approved synthetic material, compare annotation instructions, and record questions where terminology could be interpreted in more than one way. No task is intended to substitute for a pathologist's judgment. The internship does not include patient contact, patient access, medical practice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Learning activities

• Study annotation definitions for tissue structures, biomarker-related terms, and image-review concepts.
• Review sample labels against written guidance and flag ambiguity without inventing a clinical conclusion.
• Help maintain a glossary of preferred terms, exclusions, examples, and escalation questions.
• Record quality-review observations in a structured format that another reviewer can reproduce.
• Participate in supervised calibration exercises using approved non-identifying or synthetic examples.
• Prepare short educational summaries explaining why consistent terminology matters in research data.

Required eligibility

• At least a fourth-year medical student at the time of application.
• Active enrollment in an accredited medical university or medical faculty.
• Interest in pathology, anatomy, oncology, laboratory medicine, or medical data quality.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to record uncertainty instead of guessing.
• Ability to follow written instructions and communicate clearly in English; Bulgarian is useful for local context.
• Respect for access controls, confidentiality, source provenance, and supervised review procedures.

Important participation terms

This is a 0 BGN supervised educational placement under a written university-company arrangement. It includes no productive work, patient care, clinical decisions, or independent access to any systems, materials, or information. It is not clinical employment or medical practice. Participation may proceed only where the written arrangement and applicable Bulgarian law and institutional requirements permit it. No salary, stipend, benefits, employment promise, or university credit is offered.
